Refined travertine tile may be the most stain resistant from the 3 tile surface finishes. Spots on travertine tiles are mainly due to spills. Once consumed by travertine, a porous materials, these spills create spots. Polished travertine includes a lower porosity level, that allows minimal absorption of spills. You need to seal it frequently to conserve its structural integrity. Closing enhances the porosity level, gives it an increased resistance to spots.
Tumbled and honed travertine tiles are even more porous than refined tiles. Therefore, spills from products such as espresso, vinegar, citric fruit juices, salad dressings and tomato sauces quickly cause spots on these surface finishes.
